Size chart
Chain & Necklace Size Chart Guide
Find your perfect necklace length with our comprehensive chain size guide. Learn how to measure chain length, explore different necklace styles, and choose the right size for your look and occasion.
How To Measure Chain/Necklace Length
Method 1: Measure Your Neck
- Using a soft measuring tape or string, wrap it around your neck at the base where you want the chain to sit.
- Make sure the tape sits comfortably - not too tight.
- Mark where the tape or string overlaps.
- Measure the length in inches or centimetres.
- Add 2-4 inches (5-10 cm) depending on your preferred fit:
- +2 inches for a snug choker fit
- +3 inches for a comfortable collar fit
- +4 inches for a princess/standard fit
- Compare your measurement with the chart below.
Method 2: Measure an Existing Chain
- Take a chain that fits you comfortably.
- Lay it flat in a straight line.
- Use a ruler to measure the total length from clasp to clasp (or end to end).
- Match your measurement with the chart below.
- Consider your neck size and body frame when choosing chain length.
- Pendant size affects how the chain hangs - add 1-2 inches for larger pendants.
- Layering multiple chains? Choose lengths 2-4 inches apart for best effect.
- Face shape matters: longer chains elongate, shorter chains widen appearance.
- Neckline of clothing affects chain placement - test with your wardrobe.
- If between sizes, go longer - you can always adjust with extension chains.
Women's Chain Length Chart
| Length (inches) | Length (cm) | Style Name | Where It Falls | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12" | 30 cm | Collar | Sits snugly around the base of the neck | Evening wear, off-shoulder tops, statement look |
| 16" | 40.6 cm | Choker | Rests at the collarbone | Most versatile, everyday wear, business casual |
| 18" | 45.7 cm | Princess | Falls just below the collarbone | Most popular length, works with most necklines |
| 20" | 50.8 cm | Matinee | Sits at or above the bust line | Business wear, high necklines, layering |
| 22" | 55.9 cm | Matinee Plus | Falls at the bust line | Traditional Indian wear, layering, larger pendants |
| 24" | 61 cm | Opera | Falls below the bust line | Dramatic look, evening wear, long pendants |
| 28"-36" | 71-91 cm | Long/Rope | Falls at or below the waist | Layering, can be doubled, statement piece |
Note: The most popular chain lengths for women are 16" (Collar) and 18" (Princess) - perfect for everyday wear and most versatile.
Men's Chain Length Chart
Men's chains typically run longer than women's chains and are measured differently due to neck size and styling preferences.
| Length (inches) | Length (cm) | Style Name | Where It Falls | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 18" | 45.7 cm | Collar | Sits at the base of the neck | Slim build, close-fitting style, teenagers |
| 20" | 50.8 cm | Standard | Rests at the collarbone | Most popular, average build, everyday wear |
| 22" | 55.9 cm | Medium | Falls just below the collarbone | Most versatile, medium to large build |
| 24" | 61 cm | Long | Sits at or near the chest | Large build, pendants, modern style |
| 26"-30" | 66-76 cm | Extra Long | Falls mid-chest or lower | Hip-hop style, layering, statement pieces |
- Most men wear 20" or 22" chains - these are the most popular and versatile lengths.
- Consider your neck size: larger necks typically need 22-24" for a comfortable fit.
- Pendant size matters: add 2" for large pendants or religious symbols.
- Chain thickness affects appearance: thicker chains look better at longer lengths.
- For layering: choose lengths 2-3" apart (e.g., 20" + 24").
- Body build: athletic/broad-shouldered men often prefer 22-24" for a proportional look.
Note: Men's chains are measured by total length. For religious pendants or heavy chains, consider going 2 inches longer than your standard size.
Kids' Chain Length Chart
Children's chains are shorter and lighter for safety and comfort. Always choose age-appropriate designs with secure clasps.
| Length (inches) | Length (cm) | Age Group | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12" | 30.5 cm | Infant - 2 years | Baby chains, lightweight pendants, baptism gifts |
| 14" | 35.6 cm | 2 - 5 years | Toddler chains, small pendants, adjustable designs |
| 16" | 40.6 cm | 5 - 10 years | Children's standard length, everyday wear |
| 18" | 45.7 cm | 10 - 14 years | Pre-teen/teen length, transitioning to adult sizes |
- Safety first: Choose chains with breakaway clasps for babies and toddlers.
- Avoid chains longer than 14" for children under 5 years - choking hazard.
- Lightweight materials only - heavy chains can cause neck strain.
- Secure clasps are essential - check regularly for wear and tear.
- Adjustable chains with extension allow room for growth.
- Supervise young children wearing jewellery at all times.
- Remove chains during sleep, play, or sports activities.
Note: Always prioritise safety for children's jewellery. Choose age-appropriate lengths and secure, child-safe clasps. Never leave young children unsupervised while wearing chains.
Chain Style Guide by Neckline
18"-20" chains work best, sitting just below the neckline without competing with the shirt.
18"-24" chains complement the V-shape. Princess or Matinee lengths fill the neckline beautifully.
16"-18" chains (Collar or Princess) sit perfectly within the scoop, creating a balanced look.
14"-16" choker or collar lengths draw attention to the neckline and shoulders.
20"-24" longer chains sit outside the neckline. Skip short chains to avoid crowding.
20"-22" chains for men, 18"-20" for women work well, sitting at the open collar area.
20"-24" chains complement traditional necklines. Longer chains work well with deep blouse necks.
Layering Chain Lengths
Create stunning layered looks by combining multiple chain lengths. Here are popular combinations:
- 16" (Collar) + 18" (Princess) + 20" (Matinee)
- Each layer visible and distinct
- Works with most necklines
- 18" (Princess) + 24" (Opera) + 30" (Rope)
- Creates visual length and elongates the figure
- Perfect for evening wear
- 20" (Standard) + 24" (Long)
- Subtle layering without overwhelming
- Mix chain thicknesses for dimension
